AIRO’s new Laser Laboratory a world-class addition to WA medicine

The Harry Perkins Institute of Medical Research is doing incredible work to rid the world of some of its most devastating diseases. We couldn’t think of a more fitting place for the Australian Institute of Robotic Orthopaedics (AIRO) to establish its new medical laser laboratory.

This new world class facility is on Level 4 of the Harry Perkins Institute and provides a bio-secure testing environment (PC2) for the AIRO engineering team to pursue their med-tech development.

“Our new laser lab is a considerable investment,” said Associate Professor Brett Robertson AIRO Managing Director and CEO. “But it allows us to significantly advance our development of new medical technology. Put simply, it helps our team of mechatronic and software engineers to optimise the testing of what’s called the laser ablation of human bone tissue. That is, the accurate removal of bone during procedures like hip and knee replacements. It’s a critical part of our goal to transform millions of lives through better surgical procedure in this area.”

The new facility is providing a major boost to the development of AIRO’s proprietary systems that use robot-assisted laser cutting and customised implants to improve patient outcomes during arthroplasty.

Strategically located within the Queen Elizabeth II medical precinct, the new laser lab is also close to most of AIRO’s university and orthopaedic specialist partners at the UWA Department of Biomedical Sciences and Hollywood Private Hospital.
