AIRO intern wins prestigious global award

Johannes Stock receives award M.Sc. Johannes Stock was awarded the ZEISS Ph.D. Awards in Modern Optics by Dr. Michael Kempe and Dean Prof. Wipf for his project ‘Holistic Simulation Of Optical Systems’

Here at the Australian Institute of Robotic Orthopaedics (AIRO), we’re proud of our team, even when they leave the team!

Which is why we’re so happy to share the news that our very first intern, M.Sc. Johannes Stock, has been awarded his Ph.D. for his thesis titled ‘Holistic Simulation Of Optical Systems’ from the Institute of Applied Physics at the Friedrich Schiller University in Jena Germany. Johannes joined AIRO as an intern in September 2017.

Not only that, Johannes has been awarded the prestigious Ziess Ph.D Award in Modern Optics for his research excellence. His work was so impressive, Johannes was immediately offered a full-time job at Carl Zeiss as an Optical System Engineer within the central research and development department of the company.

While he was at AIRO, Johannes was a part of the development process of a totally new medical device for the removal of biological tissue by laser. He not only learned the technical implications, but also gained a deeper understanding of the outcomes from both an economical and patient point of view (as well as expanding his understanding of the Australian culture and language!).

Everyone at AIRO congratulates Johannes on attaining his PhD, for his Ziess Ph.D Award in Modern Optics and for landing that awesome job. We’d also like to add a note of acknowledgement and thanks to Prof. Dr. Herbert Gross at the Institute of Applied Physics, Friedrich Schiller University, Jena Germany for his guidance as lead PhD supervisor.
